Story Camp

Women's Writing Retreat

(formerly "Content Creation Camp")

What if someone was holding time & space . . .
especially for you. . .
to finally devote energy to your writing?

Honor Yourself and Your Creative Spirit

Join me for 3 days and 4 nights--fully dedicated to you and your writing--in a beautiful beach house on St. George Island, Florida.

Structured and unstructured time, with optional writing and creativity workshops each morning and afternoon, surrounded by plenty of time for writing, relaxing, de-stressing, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, giving yourself time to reclaim your creative voice in a safe, encouraging, and supportive environment.

Writing and Workshops

Structured time will include mini-workshops, typically an hour or so in the morning and an hour in the evening. Since we strive to meet authors where they are in experience and skills, the frequency, schedule, and topics for the mini-workshops are tailored to the needs of attendees. These sessions are held around the dining room table, in the living room, and/or outside on the expansive decks, weather permitting.

Participation in the mini-workshops is optional. If you are inspired and in flow on your own projects, feel free to continue writing on your own. There is plenty of space around the house to find a secluded writing area during the retreat.

You do not have to be a published author to attend the retreat or even have extensive writing experience. Simply come with an interest in writing, an eagerness to learn more, and a desire to enjoy the company of other writers. Plan to savor the time with these like-minded folks. The writing vibration in this house is, well, awesome!

Attendees will be working on their own varied projects. Some may be writing materials for a nonfiction book (such as memoir, self-help, inspirational), some for their businesses, blogs, or other nonfiction projects. Some will be writing fiction. Bring any writing project you wish to work on during the retreat. Or wait for inspiration to strike once there.

Workshop Topics

Many aspects of writing are not genre-dependent, so the mini-workshops will support whatever type of writing you do. The workshops will address the writing craft, including topics such as how to write dialogue, the concept of "Show, Don't Tell," how to create scene, using sensory details to give your reader a deeper experience, writing transitions, how to use metaphor and simile, and much more. In addition, we will touch on the mind of the writer--the author mindset, what it takes to be an author, author habits and best practices. (These topics are representative of what we will cover, and are subject to change based on participant needs.) If you would like to attend a longer retreat focused specifically on the craft of fiction, please check out the St. George Island Fiction Among Friends Retreats, as well.

Our Fabulous House

The retreat will be in the lovely beachfront home called “Always Awesome,” in the private and gated community of The Plantation on St. George Island, Florida. Every room has a view of the Gulf of Mexico with access to multiple covered decks, and a short path across the dunes to the wide, sandy beach. We have a wood-burning fireplace in case the January days or nights are cool (yes, the Florida Panhandle in January can often be chilly). Five bedrooms sleep up to ten attendees (room-sharing, but no bed sharing).

The Island and Nearby

St. George Island is a 28-mile-long, 5.25-mile wide, quiet, barrier island surrounded by the Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the last inhabited, yet unspoiled, barrier islands in Florida. Miles of white, sandy beaches stretch from the Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park to the other end of the island at our retreat site within St. George Plantation. Franklin County has a “Leave No Trace” Ordinance for all beaches so the public beach spaces on the island are pristine.

St. George Plantation is the location of Always Awesome, home to our retreat. In addition to a seemingly endless coastline, the Plantation has walking paths and trails that wind through lovely palms and coastal foliage. You can participate in our group walks or enjoy the beaches and trails on your own at any time during the retreat. As a private, gated community, the Plantation strives to retain the ecological splendor and vigor of the woods and beaches.

Nearby Apalachicola is a charming coastal town, with art galleries, a walking tour, a quaint, locally owned bookstore, and many local seafood restaurants. Apalachicola is in the heart of The Forgotten Coast and offers an authentic taste of the historic villages that dot this portion of the Florida Panhandle coast.
